International awards in France for Nolan's of Kilcullen
Nolan’s of Kilcullen won the award for the best “festive product” at the European craft butchers competitions in Paris this October.
The competition is run on an annual basis by the commanderie des fins gousteries du duche d’alencon.
Nolan’s home-cured & home-baked low-salt ham won the award for the best festive product in the UK. & Ireland at the competition.
Dermott Mitchell has worked in Nolan’s for over 30 years and he is responsible for the curing of all the hams all during the year and all the Christmas hams, every year. Emily Behan has the onerous task of preparing and baking all the Christmas hams which takes time and knowledge to ensure that the hams are baked to perfection.
Nolan’s of Kilcullen also won the cup for the grand prix d’honeur for their traditional pork sausages in the traditional pork sausage category and their chili sausages also won the same award in the creative sausage category. Fred Mitchell who has already won a host of gold medals this year at the Irish food writers guild judged, Irish craft butchers competitions, was thrilled to win international recognition for one of Nolan’s of Kilcullen best selling products.
James Nolan acknowledged that it was his late father, andy, who started making the sausages over 50 years ago and he also started the curing of low-salt bacon and hams. James was full of praise for all the team at Nolan’s of Kilcullen who are consistently producing top-quality products on a weekly basis at their store in Kilcullen. The sausages are our single biggest seller so it is nice to see them getting their due recognition and it is a huge award to win the best festive product in the u.K. & Ireland for our baked ham and with Christmas, only weeks away and this should give us a major boost in demand for our low salt hams for the festive season.
